Gamestime billboards, busboards & transit shelter posters.

The Halifax 2011 Canada Games are in full swing and I’ve caught my breath enough to post a few designs that are in market right now. We’ve got a campaign that includes transit shelter posters, busboards, and billboards of various sizes throughout the HRM. The concept mirrors the television spots which are on air now, focusing on the “it” factor—the motivating force—behind the athletes’ drive and success.

This is a fun little print ad promoting the Halifax 2011 Canada Games gameswear. These ads ran in the Chronicle Herald and Le Courier several weeks ago, and variations on this design are in print again this weekend. Watch for them!

This is an interactive photo kiosk, installed now at the Halifax Airport, which showcases the Halifax 2011 Canada Games medal designs. The medal designs were the result of an open competition which was won by local students, Amber Whyley and Marlon Solis.
The kiosk design includes the freestanding backdrop which features descriptive reading information on the side, as well as the medals podium in front which invites viewers to stand behind the mock podium for a photo op.
Anni & Sammi vehicle wrap

Anni & Sammi—mascots for the Halifax 2011 Canada Games—are riding in style with their very own RV to take them from venue to venue during the Games this February.
We designed this vehicle wrap artwork for the RV to mirror the look of their website: annisammi2011.ca which I’ve described in an earlier post.
The vinyl wrap was printed and applied by Atlantic Digital.

02.2011 Boutique

This month was the grand opening the the 02.2011 Boutique—the Halifax 2011 Canada Games retail merchandise store. The store is located in Barrington Place shops, which is connected to the busy Scotia Square mall in downtown Halifax by a heavily trafficked pedway.
To support the launch and exposure of the store, we designed unique storefront signage in window decals—distinct from the surrounding shops—and a series floor and mirror decals which leads the consumer to the store from the surrounding and adjacent mall.
The mirror decals feature a variety of Gameswear clothing in dynamic poses with the model’s visible body removed. This invites the viewer to “try on” the clothing by looking in the mirrors. Throughout the mall, there are also floor decals with a series of arrows leading the way to the store.
To top it off, we installed a miniature curling rink decal on the floor of the main pedway with a lure to the store on the other side!

2011 Canada Games – luggage tags
Posted by Dean Gallant in 2011 Canada Games, recent work, various on December 29th, 2010
Doing design work for the Halifax 2011 Canada Games I’ve been fortunate to experience a very wide and unique array of projects—everything from billboards to baggage tags. And, often it’s the “little things” that I’m excited about.
For these Games, we produced a variety of custom luggage tags for the traveling athletes, contingents and VIPs. Individual tags were designed and produced for each provinces and territory, as well as sport specific tags to identify sport equipment. In all that’s over 100 variations.
These tags had the dual purpose of holding the contact information of the individual owner, and for rapid identification for luggage sorting at the Halifax airport—where the luggage will be diverted directly to the Athletes’ Village or to the sport specific venues as necessary. Also, it’s typically one of many souvenir pieces the Athletes will hold on to.
The tags were produced in a durable plastic with a transparent sleeve on the reverse to slip in the contact info card.

Holiday billboards

Some fun holiday billboards promoting tickets for the Halifax 2011 Canada Games that we designed are now looming over Halifax. These are actually superboards—longer than standard billboards—and some of the largest scale media you’ll find in Atlantic Canada.
The billboards also feature the design for the Games passes (in the lower left). I’ll be sure to post those soon!

Retail pin booth

If you’ve ever been to a Canada Games, you’ll know that Pins are a big deal. Each Games will produce dozens of custom pin designs and the individual provinces and participating organizations bring their own pins to the event. People buy, collect and trade them and are generally mad for them.
For the Halifax Games, we produced a “mobile pin unit” — an easily transportable retail booth (the kind you might see at an industry tradeshow) which will move from venue to venue showcasing and selling pins.
This weekend, the booth was set up for a test event in Halifax. The intention of this design is to give the pin program a retail appeal, while maintaining a strong connection to the established Halifax 2011 brand. The background map displays the history of the Canada Games host cities as a fun interactive element.
I’m particularly proud of the bilingual wordmark. Clever, no?

Volunteer Superheroes

This is a recent campaign getting lots of visibility around Halifax, revealing the Volunteer Uniform for the Halifax 2011 Canada Games.
My coworkers at the Games developed and directed the concept, photography was by local photographer Jeff Cooke, and I took care of the layout and produced artwork for billboards, transit shelter posters and various print ads, including a colour double page spread in the Saturday Chronicle Herald!
The ads feature nine current volunteers, with the idea that they are average people who—through volunteering—are transformed into modern-day urban superheroes, with the uniform as their outfit. We produced one group shot and eight individual variations.
