Halifax Headshots logo

Here is a recent logo design for Halifax Headshots. This is a new company from Halifax photographer Kate MacLeod focusing on—you guessed it—portraits. We wanted the logo to be clean, professional, timeless and with a corporate appeal. The font used is Perpetua.

Eastern Kings Sport Council

The Eastern Kings Sports Council is a group of volunteers who are committed to enhancing sport, recreation and physical activity in the region. They came to me for a logo and this is one of the rare occasions when I get it right on the first try. No revisions, they loved it.
The mandate of the Sport Council is “working with communities, groups, schools and individuals in Eastern Kings to encourage participation in and promote the benefit of sport, physical activity and recreation in a supportive environment at all levels.” They wanted a logo which was modern, exciting, and will stand out on clothing.
Here are some notes form the design pitch:
- Vibrant colours suggest fun, movement, health & fitness.
- The abstract image gives a strong impression of motion and can be interpreted as a person running, a ball flying or any kind of activity.
- Representative of sport in general, without being specific.

SES Consulting Inc. is a dynamic Vancouver-based company that focuses on energy efficiency and conservation in commercial buildings by offering a variety of consulting services.
I’ve been working on a new logo/identity for SES Consulting along with Blue Tree Media who are doing the web work. It was a fairly involved design process and SES had a lot of input into this final design. The intention was to create a clean, strong, simple, geometric design with bold, modern colours. We went through many revisions and paid particular attention to the abstract spark symbol which can be interpreted in both senses of a spark of electricity/energy and the spark of an idea.

“Get Active” is a community based physical activity initiative that encourages all citizens in the Fundy Region of Nova Scotia to be more physically active.

They wanted a generic logo that would reproduce well in embroidery that they could then use for individual municipalities by adding place names, i.e. “Get Actve Truro”, “Get Actve Cumberland” etc…

Farm Energy Nova Scotia logo

Farm Energy Nova Scotia is a new organization whose purpose is to provide the agricultural community with guidance and research for energy sustainability on farms. I was contacted to create a simple high impact logo. After evaluating the needs, goals & audience for their logo, I presented them with several options and (with additional refinements) this is what they chose.

Farm Energy Nova Scotia logo
The imagery of the sun is an effective metaphor for the idea of renewable resources, while the silhouette of a farm & windmill suggests it literally. Blue and green colours symbolize natural ideas of earth, plants & water.

Just completed a logo design for a proposed community bio energy plant on Prince Edward Island. The bio-fuel generation project would reduce carbon emissions and energy costs for the community by capturing steam from wood burning & use it to generate heat/power.

Souris Biomass Energy System
The logo incorporates a tree from the PEI flag and references the seaside community with water, seagulls & a lighthouse. The sun symbolizes energy & sustainability. The font is Cochin (appropriate for the French/Acadian community) which is consistent with the look & feel of the Souris Harbour Authority.
Move On Colchester logo

New logo design for “Move On Colchester”. A community-based campaign aimed at advancing the wider use of active transportation in the Colchester region. Of the four options I gave them, they chose my preference and I’m very pleased with the final result.

Some notes from the design pitch:
- Displaying a range of ages & demographics drives the message of broad community inclusiveness.
- Consistent movement from left to right is symbolic of forward momentum or achieving progress.
- Multiple colours of the individuals gives the impression of multiculturalism, while being non-specific.
- Vivid red is suggestive of movement, passion or a zest for life.
