Hillwood Consulting and Real Estate
Posted by Dean Gallant in logos/identity, recent work, web design on January 25th, 2012
A colleague of mine from the Halifax 2011 Canada Games has started a new business as an umbrella for her consulting practice as well as some real estate holdings in Halifax and Ontario. Pinwheel was approached to take on the communication and identity design for the venture.
A full identity project is fantastic to work on, because I’m able to control and maintain consistency in the look & feel throughout all brand materials.
We delivered a full logo package, business card and letterhead designs, presentation templates, and design and development of a website. The big challenge in this project was to clearly present and communicate the two (somewhat unconnected) aspects of this business—the consulting and real estate. The content had to be clearly separated, while unified under a single brand.
The name “Hillwood” is derived from the family name “Hugenholtz” and the tree imagery in the logo was refined from a sketch/idea provided by the client.

Souris Harbour Authority is a long time client in my family’s hometown of Souris, P.E.I. They are a not-for-profit community based corporation established to own, operate and promote the development of the Port of Souris.
Over the years, they’ve grown and expanded their operations to include a historic lighthouse and cold storage facility. And there has been a mix of separate websites and branding for the various operations.
I was recently asked to redesign and consolidate the web presence into one central site with a consistent look & feel. It was launched this week: sourisharbourauthority.com. The site has to appeal to a varied audience including commercial shippers, agents & receivers, tourists, local residents, boat owners & fishermen.

Green Schools Nova Scotia is a new provincial program administered by Clean Nova Scotia and funded by Efficiency Nova Scotia. The program goal is to promote a culture of sustainability in the school setting. They assist schools to develop plans for implementing sustainability over the long term, and provide support, guidance, and motivation to schools over time.
Greenschoolsns.ca has been recently launched. I was contracted to develop and consulted on the design of the website. The site features an interactive map of member schools, school profiles, resources & information, success stories and various ways for students, teachers and institutions to get involved.
Osha Mae Soap – new website
Posted by Dean Gallant in recent work, web design on October 5th, 2011
Osha Mae Soap is one of my oldest clients, and a fantastic local business here in Halifax. They provide handmade artisan soap and aromatherapy products—it’s all my family uses. Products are made with Atlantic seaweed and kelp, indigenous plant herbals, certified organic Nova Scotian oils and therapeutic grade essential oils. You might have seen Osha Mae products at the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market, or at retail outlets around Nova Scotia.
I’ve been doing their identity and label design for years, and I’m very pleased to have recently designed and produced a new website, which was launched yesterday. It’s a clean and professional design, with a fully integrated online store and shopping cart system. My first retail website.

Tech Dogs provides a full range of computer support services for business and residential clients. Check the website out at techdogs.ca.
Visual Arts Nova Scotia website
Posted by Dean Gallant in recent work, web design on June 12th, 2011
Last week we launched an exciting new project, a website redesign for local non-profit organization Visual Arts Nova Scotia. This was a large project which involved a visual and functional redesign of the site, as well as the importing of content from the old website—which was extensive.
The new VANS website features an exhibitions archive, photo galleries, a searchable database of resources and art galleries and an interactive fullscreen calendar. All easy for the staff to update and manage through the WordPress content management system. It’s the most extensive website we’ve created so far, and I’m happy to see an organization utilizing all of these great features.
What I’m most excited about though, is the e-studio directory. This is a searchable directory of Nova Scotia artists with an interactive visualization map. Additionally, artists are organized by region, and tagged by medium.
Another fun feature is that each page view loads a random highlight colour. So everytime you look at a page, there’s a new colour for the header and links. This was a solution we came up with for two reasons: Because it works conceptually with the broad range of artist members, and also we couldn’t settle on a specific colour choice.
Here are some screenshots from the new site. Click to check it out!
Mi’kmaw Conservation Group
Posted by Dean Gallant in recent work, web design on May 13th, 2011
I was recently contacted by the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq to design and produce a basic website for the Mi’kmaw Conservation Group – this is an emerging group formed from various First Nation communities located in the Bay of Fundy watershed.
The mission of the MCG is “To promote and restore the concept and practice of Netuklimk in the Fundy Watershed”. Netukulimk is achieving adequate standards of community nutrition and economic well-being without jeopardizing the integrity, diversity, or productivity of our environment.
This is a basic information website – and we’ll be expanding on it as the group grows and develops.
All Rights Reserved Literacy Association

I’ve recently started volunteering as Creative Director for the All Rights Reserved Literacy Association. All Rights Reserved actively seeks to promote original artists within the community and to participate in literacy initiatives. They publish a literary journal of Poetry and Short Fiction.
Immediately, we’ve implemented an identity/logo redesign and we’ve launched a new website. The site is clean and easy to read and navigate—with an appropriate literary feel and a friendly, inviting impression. The primary focus for now is access to the current issue of the journal and the association’s blog. Look for enhancements and additions in the near future.
Web theme design contest
Posted by Dean Gallant in recent work, web design on April 1st, 2010
I don’t usually do this sort of thing, but I entered a design contest at Weebly. Weebly is a free website and blog creation tool that’s really simple to use for creating template based websites. I think it’s a good product, and I teach people how to use Weebly as part of my “Free & Easy internet promotion” workshop through Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS). I also tend to recommend Weebly to people as a no budget solution for creating a web presence. Click here to vote for me, and buy papa a new roof:
Anne Pryde Pottery

My amazing, lovely and talented wife—while doing the bulk of raising our daughter—and volunteering on the Board of the Ecology Action Centre—also finds time to make pottery. In fact, she’s a fresh and exciting ceramic artist.
Like the Chef who never cooks at home, I’ve been meaning to redesign her website for years. And, well.. we finally did it. A few weeks ago we launched the new annepryde.ca!
The clean and minimal site design really showcases what’s important: her work. Like all the web design I’m doing now, the site is search engine optimized and content-managed using the wordpress engine.
Anne’s work is available now at Love, Me boutique in downtown Halifax and she’ll be at the Halifax crafters spring show on April 17-18.
