CBC Marketplace – Guess That Price!
Posted by Dean Gallant in CBC, recent work, web design on February 11th, 2013
Here is a really fun project I got to work on for CBC’s Marketplace. They wanted an interactive game to compliment a recent episode of the show called Price Tag Confidential where they investigated the real reasons we (Canadians) pay more than Americans for everything.
For this project, I worked with another developer from Regina (Andre Mougeot) – and we designed the game together with input from the Marketplace team. I did most of the front-end design/development work as my contribution.
Debut Atlantic
Posted by Dean Gallant in book/layout, recent work, web design on February 4th, 2013
Over the last several months we’ve been busy doing design work for Debut Atlantic. Founded in 1979, and based in Halifax—Debut Atlantic is one of this country’s most dynamic and prestigious classical music touring organizations. For their current touring season, we’ve developed a new look & feel where we designed poster templates, the tour programs (cover below) and the work has culminated in the recent launch of their brand new website!
This is another responsive website design—where the site layout adapts to whatever device (phone, tablet, etc..) you are viewing it on to provide an optimal user experience. For this site, we defined a custom, easy to use system for the organization to manage their touring artists, concerts, and presenters, in addition to the general information and news they need to communicate. The individual artists have associated video/audio clips and can be easily browsed by instrumentation or touring season.
Check out an upcoming concert in your area to see some of Canada’s top emerging and accomplished classical musicians!
Visual Arts News
Posted by Dean Gallant in recent work, web design on January 21st, 2013
I’m excited to showcase our latest work, the new website for Visual Arts News! A magazine dedicated to contemporary visual art in Atlantic Canada.
The design of this site is simple and elegant, with a defined grid and considered focus on the artwork (images). The existing print publication has a strong modern design, and it was important to keep the website typography and layout consistent with that.
The main content being delivered is current exhibition listings, along with selected articles and reviews from the print magazine and additional “online exclusive” content. Check out the website and the Spring 2013 issue, which hits news stands this week!
Gillis & Company Timber Frames
Posted by Dean Gallant in recent work, web design on October 15th, 2012
This summer, I produced a website for a very interesting client—Gillis & Company Timber Frames—who specialize in custom timber frame home design and construction. The product they offer is gorgeous. Handcrafted, high quality, combining heavy-duty traditional joinery and techniques with modern design. Their site features some striking photography that I encourage you to check out.
This is also the first website I’ve produced which is responsive. This is a modern approach to web design in which a site will adapt to provide an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation—across a range of devices (from desktop computers to tablets to mobile phones). The website layout will effectively adapt to whatever device it’s being viewed on. This is an ideal product for my clients because they can provide ubiquitous content and information to their customers (regardless of the device they’re using) while still maintaining a single—easy to update and maintain—website.
I’ve been really enjoying responsive design, and am currently working on a few more responsive sites—so stay tuned!
Mi’kmaw Conservation Group

This was a website redesign project for the Mi’kmaw Conservation Group. They are a relatively new local organization who’s mission is to promote and restore the concept and practice of “Netukulimk” in the Bay of Fundy Watershed. Netukulimk is an ancient Mi’kmaq term describing their way of life—taking only what is needed and wasting nothing.
A fantastic organization to work with, and I’m personally very pleased with the outcome of this project.
Canada Games Centre 2011-2012 Annual Report
Posted by Dean Gallant in book/layout on June 25th, 2012
I’ve recently completed work on the 2011-2012 Annual Report for the Canada Games Centre. It’s their first annual report, published as an interactive online .pdf.
For the design of this report, we continued a theme of that was established for the membership appreciate day at the Centre—using the idea of sports pennants to portray a feeling of celebration and victory.
The report is light on text and heavy on colourful imagery and photographs. Also, check out the fun infographics featured below.
Mi’kmaq Maliseet Nations News
Posted by Dean Gallant in recent work, web design on May 25th, 2012
We’ve just launched a new website for Mi’kmaq Maliseet Nations News (MMNN)!
MMNN is a First Nation owned, community focused monthly newspaper based out of Millbrook, Nova Scotia with a particular expertise in Mi’kmaq culture. The objectives of the newspaper are to celebrate and lift people up with an emphasis on positive stories and success stories in the Mi’kmaq community, to archive and record history, to educate, and to provide information on current stories and events that have relevance to the Mi’kmaq and Maliseet people in Atlantic Canada. MMNN has been publishing for over 10 years, and this is their first foray into the realm of online publishing.
The site we developed is a subscriber-based news website. Non-subscribers have access to snippets from stories, obituaries, job and event listings while subscribers have additional access to full stories and online editions of the full newspaper presented within an embedded pdf viewer.

Clean Temple Wellness Studio
Posted by Dean Gallant in brochures, logos/identity, recent work, web design on February 9th, 2012
Located in a historic building in Downtown Halifax, Clean Temple Wellness Studio offers a nutrition based approach to achieving optimal health during all stages of life. Their services include nutrition & lifestyle consultations, weight-loss, workshops in cleansing, detoxification, digestion & candida elimination.
Pinwheel was tasked with developing the brand identity including logo, cards, brochures, office documents, signage, and the web presence for this new business. The studio is run by Holistic Nutritional Consultant Anne Pryde—who also happens to be my lovely and amazing wife!
The imagery we developed for the Clean Temple logo brings to mind ideas of growth & renewal, health & vibrancy, a supportive community and nature & balance. It was important that the overall presentation of this identity be professional, clean and somewhat medical, while maintaining a welcoming, open and down-to-earth appeal.
At it’s core, this business is all about food. Helping people to make healthier & more informed food choices, alleviating symptoms that are caused by what we eat, sharing a love of cooking & good eating, and supporting the many quality local providers here in Nova Scotia.
This is a great thing. And, I’m excited for a long life of fantastic healthy eating.
